Installation of Bishop Taryn Montgomery

Following the election of Bishop-Elect Taryn Montgomery on April 25, 2026, we as the Northeastern Minnesota Synod are in a time of transition. Bishop-Elect Taryn takes office on August 1st. Until then, Bishop Amy Odgren continues to serve as bishop. This page, with Frequently Asked Questions, is meant to answer common questions. Synod Operations during the Transition  Congregations should expect day-to-day synod operations to continue as usual. Synod staff will continue serving congregations, rostered leaders and SAMs, and ministry partners throughout the transition. Questions may be directed to the synod office by phone (218) 724-4424 or by email to info@nemnsynod.org. Bishop Elect Taryn Montgomery begins her term on August 1, 2026. She is assembling her staff and has made an announcement of her staff.

Installation Details The Installation of Bishop Taryn Montgomery is Saturday, September 12th, 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E Superior Street, Duluth. Congregations, Rostered Ministers, Synod Authorized Ministers, ecumenical partners, and guests from across the church will gather for this special occasion of worship and celebration. Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry of the ELCA will preside and preach. Rostered Ministers are invited to vest and process. The color of the day is red. A light reception will follow the service. Childcare will be provided.

What does a bishop do? A synod bishop is the pastor and chief spiritual leader for the synod, called to preach, teach, and administer the sacraments while providing pastoral care and guidance to congregations, rostered ministers, and Synod Authorized Ministers (SAMs). The bishop ordains, attests and provide for installation of calls, leads the synod’s mission, and ensures that preaching, teaching, and sacramental life are faithful to the gospel and the ELCA’s Confession of Faith.
