Have you ever been through a tough situation and thought, “I don’t know how I would’ve made it without the people around me”? That is what church is meant to be. Not just a place where we sing songs and hear sermons, but a community where we carry each other through life. Granted life is heavy and living in the world is not easy for any one of us. God never intended that we should have to go through life alone. From the very beginning, he looked at Adam and said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” We are all created with a deep need for connection.
Church is much more than people coming together each week. Church is people who are like family. They know each other, care for each other, and stand with each other when difficulties arise. Galatians 6:2 says, “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Whose burdens are you helping to carry right now? And, who is helping carry yours? Sometimes people are hesitant to share their pain as they have been hurt in the past when they have done so. As Christian’s we are to be safe people to others. To be trustworthy and loving and to offer encouragement with the right words at the right time. And, sometimes support is just a silent presence. Just like Job’s friends who sat with him for seven days—no preaching, no advice, just their presence.
Church is not a crowd — it's a community. It is not an event — it’s a support system.
So, are we a church that shows up for those God places before us? Are we a community that provides support? Are we a church that holds each other up? Jesus bore our grief, he carried our shame, he forgave us of our wrongdoings, and he gave us the ultimate model of what it means to support others. He invites us to do the same. Not to save people (that’s his job) but to walk with them until they find the strength to go on.
Dear Lord, make Faith, a church that lifts each other up and lets no one walk alone. Help us to see that it is ok to cry together, to laugh together and to carry each other through life’s difficult times; whether it is grief, financial hardship, illness, doubt or fear of the unknown. May our support for others come not just through prayer, but also through our presence, action and compassion. Amen Children’s Prayer
