“THE CHURCH…Bearing One Another’s Burdens” “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
If we are honest with ourselves, life gets heavy, even for believers. In our church, there may be individuals who are silently carrying a broken heart, a troubled marriage, a financial crisis, a health battle, or even a spiritual struggle. Sometimes we are too embarrassed to share our own burdens and so we hide them from ourselves and from others. The world that we live in is a world that idolizes independence, making us feel we are left to manage everything on our own. God did not make us to be self-sufficient. He never intended for his people to suffer alone. That is why our verse from, Galatians 6:2 is so important. It is not just a suggestion for us, it is a command. When we care, we are present with others through the ups and down of life. And, when we love, we are there to carry another’s burdens.
The church teaches us to show compassion for one another and that the commandment of love is to be lived out in our daily lives. When we help a single parent make ends meet, we are fulfilling the commandment to love. When we listen to someone’s pain without judgment, we are living out the commandment to love. When we pray for someone going through a dark time, we are opening ourselves to experience the commandment to love. You see, God gave us the commandment to love as he never intended for his people to suffer alone.
True Christianity is not proven by how much you know — but how much you care.
If our church becomes known for our building, our sermons, our music, and not for the love we show others, can we be called a church that cares? Can we be a safe place for those who feel broken? Are we a place where the weary can find rest? Are we really a beacon of light to those who need help?
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your son who carried our greatest burdens to the cross. Now, teach us how to see others with your eyes. Help us to listen, to love, and to lift one another up. Make our church a place in this community where we care, we support and we leave no one to suffer alone. Amen
