“THE CHURCH…Living God’s Heart in an Unjust World”

"Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

What do you think of when you hear the word “justice”? So much of what is happening in our world today invoke feelings of unfairness, inequality, and ignorance of human rights. So, where do we find justice in all of this? Where have we, as a society, gone wrong? We turn to the legal system to deal with injustice issues, and then we get upset when large sums of money are spent on legal battles. Our peaceful protests tend to erupt in violence, with more people being hurt and no one being helped. News reports on injustice activities seem to fall on deaf ears. And, we are left wondering, can we even change the injustice that is happening today?

For Jesus, justice was not an option—it was a requirement. When he saw injustice happening, especially to the widows, orphans, immigrants, the poor and the oppressed; he confronted the people who were causing the injustice and he expected them to change their ways. Jesus was very clear. Injustice would not happen if everyone would value others lives and treat all people with respect, whether we know them or not.

True justice walks humbly, loves deeply, and fights boldly.

It is at the church we learn to follow Christ’s example and his teachings of how we are to treat one another in this unjust world. It is where we learn practical methods and are given opportunities to demonstrate justice by serving those in need and those who are marginalized. In the church, we develop relationships that keep us accountable. It is in the church where we are empowered to see the goodness in others. It is through the church we move out into the community and beyond, demonstrating all we have learned about Christ’s justice, his mercy and his love.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for being a God of justice and mercy. Forgive us for all those times we have turned a blind eye to the suffering and pain in this world. Now give us courage to act justly, give us hearts that love, and the humility to walk in your ways. Make us a church that stands for what is right by bringing a voice to the voiceless, hope for the hopeless, and a light that reflects your justice in this broken world. Amen
